IF YOU DO NOT FIGHT FOR THEM NOBODY WILL PART 1

Just before I open up my heart and flood this page with my thoughts, the first question that I ask myself is; do we really understand what female genital mutilation is? Some people prefer to call it Clitoridectomy. Let us define this word.

Clitoridectomy is a surgical procedure to REMOVE all or part of the clitoris also known as female circumcision. This sounds like a very important medical procedure when you read about it for the first time. BUT there is nothing positive about it, when all it does is cause harm and even kill.

These last few days FGM has been all over the news. This December, the future of many girls will be destroyed if we do not raise our voices on this particular matter. This month young girls have died because of what is termed “THE CUT.” For example, according to The Star December 5 2015, a standard seven girl died after the cut in Kerio Valley because she lost a lot of blood. This is not the first time that we have come across this. Maybe we are reading through this article and thinking, “What is the big deal anyway?” or “It doesn’t happen in my culture. Perhaps, “Aiiiiii it is a rite of passage. It doesn’t harm anyone so many people have gone through it any way!”

My question would be: Are you serious!? Young girls are dying and all you can say in defence is, "...it is a rite of passage." Perharps, we do not exactly know what happens.

For those of us who have read Half a Day and other short stories, you have probably come across this. Against the Pleasure Principle was written by one amazing author Saida Hagi-Dirie Herzi. This was my set book in high school. Saida wrote about what exactly happens. This helped me understand the gruesome and inhumane, procedure

Take a read!!!

Another portion of the short story Saida continues to explain and narrate the long tem effects of female circumcision.
